Making an appointment

You do not need a referral to make an appointment with Marlow Psychology. To make an appointment contact us by email, or make a request on our contact form. We will then be in touch to arrange a convenient time for you. A confirmation email will be sent to you highlighting all the important information you will need before your appointment, such as your appointment time, our fees, terms and conditions and a location map.

Coming to your first appointment

Feeling uncomfortable or anxious before coming along to your first appointment is very normal. We naturally feel nervous meeting new people and going to new places. Likewise when first meeting your psychologist you may feel a little uneasy, as is normal when preparing to discuss concerns that have been bothering you.

In the first session, we will conduct a thorough assessment of your current life situation, your difficulties, any related factors and history. This is important to enable us to help you in the most effective and efficient way.

You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and, if time permits, we will also generate a plan for your psychological treatment.

Confidentiality and honesty

We understand and respect the need for privacy when discussing sensitive matters and all personal information that we hold is strictly confidential and is stored in accordance with the British Psychological Society's Professional Code of Practice and the UK Data Protection Act 1998.

In the rare circumstance that the psychologist is concerned that someone may harm themselves or others, this will be discussed with you and often your GP will need to be informed.

To be treated with respect, understanding and receive guidance

We offer a non-judgmental and respectful environment where our primary goal is to see the resolution of your concerns. You can look forward to an honest approach to guidance that is objective and impartial. We will always take into account your specific, personal situation before providing you with any direction and guidance.

Flexible session scheduling

A normal appointment is 50 minutes in length.  Appointments are generally booked either weekly or fortnightly and typically most people require between 5 to 15 sessions. Following our assessment, we will endeavour to advise you of the number of sessions and frequency of appointments we recommended for best outcomes.  Our treatment plans are flexible to fit in with your schedule.

To be an active participant in your own treatment

This means that you can expect to be fully involved in your sessions and to develop with your psychologist some tasks to practice in between sessions. This may be in the form of practical exercises or reading material.

To get the most out of treatment, (and to minimise the number of sessions you may need to attend), we encourage you to try things out between sessions, so that we can revise, refine and tailor treatment during sessions based on what we learn about what works best for you, and to get the best outcomes.

Most people feel the benefits of treatment after a couple of sessions. However, the total number of sessions required depends on several factors. Psychological research indicates that clients typically require between 5 and 15 sessions for resolution and relapse prevention of common psychological difficulties.

To help you get the most out of your appointments, we will periodically review the progress of your therapy, with reference to your goals. In general, sessions begin on a regular basis and the frequency of sessions decreases over the course of treatment, with intermittent follow up ‘maintenance’ sessions as you feel you need them.

Fees & Terms

Fees and Payment Methods

Self payment - Our fees are currently £95 per consultation session for individuals. Each session normally lasts 50 minutes. You will receive an invoice at the end of each session.  We kindly request that fees are paid either by cash or cheque at the end of the session.

Private medical insurance - We are a recognised provider with BUPA, AXA PPP and VitalityHealth. Please contact your insurer first to clarify what they cover. Although your insurers will be paying, you remain responsible for any amount they do not pay. If your insurance provider is not listed, please contact us.

Late cancellation

We understand that at times things come up unexpectedly that may result in your needing to cancel or reschedule your appointment. If you are unable to make your scheduled appointment we ask that you provide us with at least 48 hours notice. Otherwise a 50% cancellation session fee will apply.  Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice or if no notice is received, will be charged at the full amount.
